Fun Sheep Facts
Why Use sheep milk in soap?
Our sheep milk is naturally homogenized, which is why it remains intact and does not separate in soap, liquid or bars.
Sheep milk has a very high fat content, which allows it to naturally moisturize and nourish your skin. The sheep fat is great for preventing dryness and cracking of your skin. Sheep milk is high in A, B, C, and D vitamins and contains natural alpha-hydroxyl acids, which have a rejuvenating and softening effect on human skin.
How long have sheep been domesticated?
Dogs were the first animals to be domesticated. Sheep and goats are tied for second and third. The sheep of today have evolved through thousands of generations of human contact and are fully domesticated.
How long to sheep live?
Sheep normally live between 10 and 20 years. The average is about 10 to 12 years. However, the length of a sheep's productive life tends to be much less. This is a ewe's productivity usually peaks between 3 and 6 years of age and begins to decline after age 7. As a result, most ewes are removed from their flock before they are 10 years old. In harsh environments, ewes are normally culled at a younger age because in harsh conditions a ewe's teeth will break down making it difficult for them to eat and maintain their body condition.
What is a "Cast" sheep?
A sheep that has rolled over on its side or back is called a "cast" sheep. It may not be able to get up. This happens mostly with short, stocky sheep with heavy fleeces on flat terrain. Heavily pregnant ewes are most prone. Cast sheep become distressed and can die within a short time if not rolled back into a normal position. When back on their feet they may need to be supported for a few minutes before release to ensure they are steady.
